In seeking a fabric to
create our horse blanket we were looking for a fabric that would
withstand abrasion, wick away moisture effectively, and looks (and
feels) great. When we found the bamboo fabric we were so amazed
at how well it does all these things! And then we discovered
it does so much more with its natural antibacterial qualities,
environmentally friendly and it looks and feels so much better than our
first imaginings of a horse blanket. We are so excited about our
horse blanket!
Bamboo fabric is an incredible fabric, relatively new, and considered
by the textile industry to be a superior fiber and playing in a
category of its own. Which is the reason we chose it as the fabric to
make our horse blanket out of. Not only did it meet our requirement for
a horse blanket fabric, but it is also environmentally
friendly.
Bamboo fabric excels in the following areas, making it very suitable for an equine blanket:
- Absorption
and wicking of moisture away from the body -
leaving horse dry much faster than the traditional fabrics used
- Incredibly soft to the touch - for both you and your horse
- Easy draping, which gets better after each wash
- Easy dying; it dries without mildew smell as it is naturally antibacterial. (I
ran a test on my personal bamboo towel using it every day for a
week and leaving it to dry in the bathroom, it never
smelled. Also Oprah wore a pair of socks for a week and had the audience smell them!)
- Wash and dry in the home machine! Great after a hard ride
- Splendid colors with a special luster, that are stain resistant
- High
rupture-ability, stands abrasion - which in the case of our horse
cooler means that it has much better chances of surviving when
getting stepped on by the horse, or caught on a gate or anything else!
- Naturally antibacterial, even after washing*
- Easy on sensitive skin as it is not chemically treated*
- Highly elastic
- Superior breathing ability (ideal for humid summers - or wet horses)
Bamboo - The Growth of the Ecologically Friendly Fiber:
- Bamboo growth has been measured at almost four feet in a twenty four hour period during the spring.
- Bamboo may live up to 15 years depending on the species - on average, seven to ten years is very common.
- Bamboo is native to many countries, in Asia, Africa, North and South America.
- Bamboo supports a global economy.

It's a common fact that bamboo can thrive naturally without using any
pesticides. It is seldom eaten by pests or infected by pathogens.
Scientists found that bamboo has a unique anti-bacteria and
bacteriostasis bio-agent named "bamboo Kun".
Bamboo
fiber has particular anti-bacteria natural functions and deodorization.
It has been validated by the Japan Textile Inspection Association that,
even after washing it fifty times, bamboo fabric still possesses
excellent anti-bacterial qualities. The test results show that over 70%
of the bacteria being incubated on bamboo fiber fabric died. Bamboo
fiber's natural anti-bacteria function differs greatly from that
of chemical antimicrobial agent's. The latter often tend to
cause skin allergies when added to apparel.
